International trips offer the opportunity to explore new worlds and immerse oneself in native cultures and unique traditions. Nevertheless, during the excitement of the new journeys, one needs to be aware of the responsible way to travel. One key element that is a necessity for most countries is travel insurance.
In this article, we will understand why it is essential to have international travel insurance. Additionally, we will learn about the countries that have made travel insurance mandatory for individuals who visit.
Travelling abroad requires navigating diverse country regulations, with COVID-19 prompting stricter entry requirements like negative test results and travel health insurance. Even where not mandated, travel insurance is wise, covering emergencies and easing the visa application process. It has become mandatory in many countries to manage healthcare costs and protect tourists and hosts financially.
Is travel insurance mandatory?
Travelling abroad involves more than purchasing airline tickets and getting visas—each country has different regulations that must be fulfilled prior to visiting, taking up considerable amounts of time and energy on paperwork alone, such as health conditions and documents.
After the pandemic hit, many countries tightened entry requirements in an effort to combat its spread. Negative RT-PCR test reports, vaccination certificates, and travel history declarations were some of the compulsory entry requirements that travellers had to fulfil before entering.
Another requirement is travel health insurance coverage in case a visitor falls ill while travelling abroad. Several countries made COVID-19 insurance compulsory during pandemic outbreaks to protect visitors against possible health emergencies while visiting these nations.
Even in countries that do not require travel insurance, having it is highly advisable. Unexpected events, like trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and lost baggage, can arise suddenly. Such events can put both financial and emotional strains on travellers. With adequate protection in place, you can better handle such scenarios while having peace of mind.

Why is travel insurance important and becoming mandatory?
1. Financial protection for travellers
Travel insurance offers travellers financial security against unexpected events that might arise while visiting another country, including trip cancellation, lost/stolen items and emergency medical costs. With all that could go wrong when visiting unfamiliar lands, having travel protection provides peace of mind should something unexpectedly arise that requires medical treatment or emergency attention.
2. Protects the nation
Travel insurance can shield host countries from financial loss. For instance, traditionally, when travellers became sick or injured while abroad, medical costs would typically fall upon the host nation to cover.
With travel insurance, though, those expenses can now be passed onto an insurance provider more efficiently, considering the rising healthcare costs around the world.
3. COVID-19
Finally, the global COVID-19 pandemic has helped us understand how important health and safety measures are. Nations are mandating travel insurance for those travelling across borders as it helps guarantee that tourists will not incur costs associated with contracting the illness during their trip.
Impact of travel insurance policy on the visa process
In case you are wondering if international travel insurance can impact your visa process, the answer to that is yes. In some instances, travel insurance requirements can even be a part of the visa eligibility criteria. If someone gets injured due to your travels or if their actions accidentally damage local property, then the locals can get fair compensation. You won't be required to pay out of pocket immediately.
Travel insurance can make the visa application process smoother as it shows that you're a prepared and responsible candidate. It also creates a great impression with those reviewing your visa application and shows that you are aware of potential travel-related risks and working to manage them.
Benefits of buying an international travel insurance policy
- Passport loss: If your passport goes missing during a trip, an international travel insurance plan provides peace of mind by covering expenses associated with replacing it.
- Flight delays: Travel insurance with trip delay benefits is designed to protect travellers in these instances of unforeseen delays or trip cancellations.
- Luggage loss coverage: Have you lost your checked-in baggage after arriving at your destination airport? Have no fear; your international travel insurance could provide coverage against such circumstances.
- Trip cancellation: Travel insurance may also reimburse trip expenses in case of cancellation due to unexpected medical emergencies - provided your plan covers this condition.
International travel insurance is mandatory when travelling to other countries for several reasons, including covering medical costs and offering financial protection against any other unexpected needs. Travellers may also face issues when completing the visa due to a lack of travel insurance. Hence, check which countries need travel insurance and buy travel insurance after understanding the coverage options available.
